Artificial & Emotional Intelligence: Promising Allies or a Risky Pairing?

Artificial intelligence (AI) has long captured society’s imagination, conjuring images of humanoid robots, sentient machines, and dystopian futures. But while science fiction envisions AI as autonomous and self-aware, the reality is far different. The First Criteria: Problem Solving

There is no doubt that modern AI systems have become exceptional problem solvers. Thanks to advancements in computational methods and language analysis, AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT have become indispensable in daily life. From analyzing vast amounts of data in record time to powering voice assistants like Siri and Alexa, AI has proven itself as an essential productivity tool. But here’s the catch: while AI can process information at speeds that surpass human capabilities, true intelligence isn’t just about finding answers – it’s about recognizing context, intent, and the deeper meaning behind each problem.

The Second Criteria: Emotional Intelligence

Psychologists Peter Salovey and John Mayer define emotional intelligence as the ability to perceive, understand, and manage emotions – both one’s own and those of others1. In an attempt to replicate this capability, a growing field known as emotional AI has emerged. However, fundamental challenges remain, including its inability to recognize deviations in human emotional responses like sarcasm and humor.

Because AI relies primarily on surface-level cues rather than true emotional comprehension, it remains prone to misinterpretations, lacking the depth needed to fully grasp human intent and nuance.

Beyond Accuracy: The Ethical Implications of Emotional AI

The limitations of sentiment analysis also raise important ethical concerns. When AI systems are entrusted with interpreting human emotions, the risks extend beyond miscommunication. From privacy and data security to bias and fairness, emotional AI introduces new dilemmas about how businesses should ethically collect, analyze, and act on emotional data.

  3. Bias & Fairness: AI models trained on limited or skewed data may struggle to interpret emotions across different cultures and demographics, reinforcing systemic biases. Ensuring fairness requires diverse datasets and ongoing monitoring.
  4. Autonomy & Human Oversight: Over-reliance on AI in emotionally sensitive decisions—such as hiring, healthcare, or legal judgments—could lead to reduced human oversight. AI should assist rather than replace human judgment.
  5. Manipulation & Ethical Uses: Emotional AI can be used to influence behavior, from targeted advertising to political messaging. Without ethical guidelines, it risks being exploited for manipulation rather than meaningful engagement.

AI as an Assistant, not a Decision-Maker
